Week 2 — Capstone TeamsSPXLab.Partners
2.5 | Team Charter
09 / 10

A Team Charter Is Your Team’s Operating System

A strong charter turns a group of students into an aligned, accountable project team.

01

Purpose

Why does our team exist, and what are we trying to accomplish?

02

Roles & Ownership

Who is responsible for what, and how will work be distributed?

03

Communication

Where, when, and how often will we communicate?

04

Working Agreements

What behaviors and standards can every member expect?

05

Decision-Making

How will we make decisions when the answer is not obvious?

06

Conflict & Accountability

How will we address missed commitments, disagreement, or uneven participation?

A great charter is specific enough to guide behavior—not simply a list of good intentions.

Week 2 — Capstone TeamsSPXLab.Partners
2.5 | Team Charter
10 / 10

Write Agreements Your Team Can Actually Use

Vague Agreement

Actionable Agreement

“We will communicate regularly.”

We will use Microsoft Teams for project communication and respond within 24 hours on weekdays.

“Everyone will contribute.”

Each deliverable will have one accountable owner, supporting contributors, and an internal due date.

“We will attend meetings.”

We will meet every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Members will notify the team at least four hours before an absence.

“We will make decisions together.”

We will seek consensus first. If consensus cannot be reached, we will use a majority vote.

“We will handle conflict professionally.”

We will address concerns directly within 48 hours, focus on the issue rather than the person, and escalate unresolved concerns to the professor when necessary.

Before You Submit, Confirm

  • ✓Every team member contributed to the charter.
  • ✓Roles and responsibilities are clearly defined.
  • ✓Communication methods and response-time expectations are documented.
  • ✓The team has agreed on meeting frequency and attendance expectations.
  • ✓Decision-making and conflict-resolution processes are clear.
  • ✓Every team member has acknowledged the final agreement.

Week 2 Assignment: 2.5 | Team Charter — 5 Points

Your charter is the agreement your team will return to when the project becomes challenging.
